Operation of Hope in Partnership with SHAL successfully conduct the 2024 surgical mission

Operation of Hope successfully conducted its 33rd surgical camp at Mpilo Central Hospital, providing essential surgical care to 88 children suffering from cleft lip, cleft palate, and lipoma. This initiative marked another significant milestone in their ongoing commitment to offering surgical support for individuals with facial deformities.
Matron Norma Mabhena, the public relations officer at Mpilo Hospital, reported that this year’s screenings attracted clients from various regions across Zimbabwe, including Binga, Harare, Nkayi, and Lupane.
The collaboration between Operation of Hope and Schweppes Holdings Africa Limited made a profound impact on the lives of those in need. In preparation for this year’s surgeries, Schweppes Holdings Africa Limited refurbished the A3 Ward at Mpilo and generously provided meals for the dedicated staff, children, and caregivers involved in this noble endeavour.
Cleft lip and cleft palate are congenital disorders that affect the facial structure of infants, occurring when tissues in the lip and mouth do not properly fuse during fetal development. These conditions can lead to difficulties with eating, drinking, speech, and overall quality of life. Fortunately, surgical intervention can significantly improve both function and appearance for affected individuals.
The surgeries not only enhance the appearance of the lip and palate but also positively impact self-esteem and social interactions. The work of organizations like Operation of Hope is crucial in improving the lives of children and adults affected by these conditions.
